Baby & Me

(Ages 6 - 24 months)


This introduces you and your child to basic skills. As parents, you learn how to safely work with your child, including how to appropriately support and hold your child in the water and how to prepare and encourage your child to participate fully and try the skills. In addition, you are introduced to several water safety topics. Your child receives an introduction to basic skills that lay a foundation for learning to swim.


Diaper Policy: If a child is not toilet trained or is toilet trained for less than 6 months, he/she must wear a disposable diaper and an approved cloth swim diaper to assure a double layer of protection.

Preschool & Youth

(24 months - Grade 5)


Sharpen your child's swimming and water safety skills! Our small group ratio allows children to practice social distance. Children enrolled in a Mandel JCC childcare program will be picked up children from their classroom and then returned for carpool at the end of the lesson.

Adult Swim Clinic

This program is perfect for the beginning swimmer all the way up to serious triathletes. Come learn from the best with over 35 years of experience in a friendly environment.

Class Descriptions

Babies

6-15 Months

  • Prerequisites: 6-15 Months, with an adult in the water with child. Goals: Introduction to swimming fundamentals and survival skills focusing on: buoyancy, balance, getting back to the edge of the pool and moving along the pool edge. Key focus is building proper breath control and other survival skills using songs and pool toys to key recognition of skill and to enhance learning.

16 Months-2.5 Years

  • Prerequisites: 16 Months-2.5 Years, Adult Must be Present
  • Goals: Introduction to buoyancy and balance, monkey walk, introduction to breath control, floating and safety skills, introduction to back floating, skills and songs are alternated to enhance learning.

Tadpoles

  • Prerequisites: This level is designed for little swimmers just exiting the baby and me classes. These little swimmers are introduced to independent swimming.
  • Goals: Introduction to swimming on their front with proper use of arms and legs. Lessons will focus on breathing while swimming, swimming on their back, extended front and back floating, and safety skills. Safety skill such as jumping in and returning to the side and monkey crawl on the wall.

Toddlers

Level 1 - The Foundation

  • Prerequisites: This level is all about getting your little ones happy and confident in and around the water. They will learn about water safety and start to develop the necessary skills to be a productive and safe swimmer.
  • Goals: Introduction to buoyancy, balance and breath control and movement. This is the foundational level. The focus will be on getting the kids comfortable in the water to set the basic foundation for the upcoming levels. Proper breath control, blowing bubbles, going underwater with eyes open and introduction to back floating. If under 36 months, child should start in Baby & Me class if not comfortable with separation physically able to separate.

Level 2 - Building the Bridge

This level sets the tone for the upcoming levels. Being confident and happy in the water is vital for learning the more advanced swim skills. This level will focuses on building that confidence and forming the understanding of the survival skills. Prerequisites: Child is comfortable with in water and competent in Toddler Level 1

  • Goals: Beginning of independent back floating, Introduction to rolling over for breath, able to get back to the edge of the pool, underwater skills such as getting rings from the bottom, front float, swim 2-3 body lengths with eyes under water comfortably with proper breathe control safety skills.

Level 3 - Putting the Pieces Together

This is the level where all the earlier work comes together. During the lessons, kids will start building their endurance and distance, as well as refine the necessary skills to be safe in and around the water. This is the life-saving level.

  • Prerequisites: Child must be able to swim 2-3 body lengths with eyes in comfortably and can back float on their own.
  • Goals: Independent back floating and rolling over and floating multiple times over a set distance. This level is where we start to work on the traditional swim skills: streamline glide from the wall, elementary backstroke arms and kicks to build to the full stroke, backstroke kicks with float, introduction to breaststroke kick, backstroke, introduction to dolphin kick, introduction to freestyle stroke when kids show proper breathe control. Continuing to focus on earlier level safety procedures, jump in from edge get back to the wall or float to their backs.

Age Groups: Levels 1-6

  • Goals: Beginning to independent back floating, introduction to roll over breathing, able to get back to the edge of the pool, underwater skills such as getting rings from the bottom, front float, swim 2-3 body lengths with eyes under water comfortably with proper breathe control, safety skills

Level 3 - Putting the Pieces Together

  • Prerequisites: Child can back float and swim with eyes under water 2-3 body lengths without a breath.

Level 4 - Now we’re Moving!

In this level you will see the building of the traditional swim skills and strokes. The focus for this level is to build the pieces for an efficient freestyle stroke. Traditional swim skills are all about proper technique and this level will focus on putting the individual stroke parts together.

  • Prerequisites: Child must be able to swim 4-5 body lengths and roll over for a breath unassisted.
  • Goals: Freestyle with breathing turning the head to the side, using streamline with kicks, proper technique elementary backstroke, continuous freestyle swim with side breathing for 1 pool length. Proper backstroke stroke with turn at the wall, breaststroke kicks, dolphin kicks, introduction to breaststroke arm movement.

Level 5 - Build, Build, Build

This level is about building on existing ability by adding the more advanced swim skills, breaststroke, backstroke and butterfly. This is the level where kids are starting to look at joining swim team. Endurance and distance are a focus.

  • Prerequisites: Child must be able to swim freestyle with side breathing for 1 pool length.
  • Goals: Putting breaststroke arm and legs together fully, backstroke with proper turn at the wall and streamline, introduction to butterfly, freestyle with alternate side breathing for one pool length, 5 minute continuous swim.

Level 6 - Developmental Swim Team

This level is about putting the final touches on the advanced swim skills. Getting kids ready to make the jump to our JSwim Recreational Team so they can participate and compete right away. This level will get into the specifics of team swimming.

  • Prerequisites: Child can swim with alternate side breathing for one length of the pool and complete 5 minutes continuous swim.
  • Goals: Breaststroke with proper breathing and turns, Butterfly with breathing and turns introduction to individual medley, emphasis is on increasing distance on all strokes with proper distance. This level can coached from in or out of the water.
